SEO in the Age of AI: What Still Works and What Does Not
Search is changing faster than most marketers realise. We break down what AI-driven search means for organic visibility and how to stay ahead.
Google has been an AI company for years, but the launch of AI Overviews and the rapid adoption of AI-powered search assistants have accelerated a shift that was already underway. The question every marketer and business owner is asking: is SEO still worth investing in?
What Has Actually Changed
The mechanics of how search works have shifted meaningfully. AI Overviews now answer many informational queries directly on the results page, reducing click-through rates for the top organic results on those queries. Zero-click searches — where users get their answer without visiting a website — have increased.
At the same time, transactional and navigational queries remain highly valuable. When someone is ready to buy, hire, or sign up, they still click through. The traffic that converts is holding up better than the traffic that was always low-intent.
What No Longer Works
Thin content written primarily for keyword density is now a liability, not an asset. Google's helpful content system and AI-powered quality signals have become very good at identifying content that exists to rank rather than to genuinely help.
Backlink schemes, exact-match anchor text manipulation, and low-quality directory submissions — tactics that worked in 2018 — are now active risks. The penalty for being caught has become more severe and harder to recover from.
What Still Works (and Works Better Than Ever)
Deep, original content that demonstrates genuine expertise continues to perform strongly. Content written by people who actually know the subject — with specific examples, original analysis, and real opinions — is exactly what the current algorithms favour and what AI-generated content struggles to replicate convincingly.
Technical SEO fundamentals — fast load times, clean site structure, proper schema markup, mobile performance — remain important and arguably more so as AI crawlers parse your content. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) signals have never been more important.
How to Position for the Next Phase
The brands winning in AI-era search are investing in three things: building genuine subject matter authority in a defined niche rather than trying to rank for everything; creating content that is genuinely better than what already exists, not just different; and diversifying their traffic sources so that search algorithm changes do not create existential risk.
SEO is not dying — it is maturing. The tactics that required no real skill or expertise are being automated away. What remains is harder, slower, and more durable.
